High School Team Challange

What is High School Team Challenge?

New this year, our Race will include a High School Team Challenge Program.  This program was initiated by a high school student from Columbus Ohio in 2001, and has been successfully implemented by many affiliates throughout the country.

The High School Team Challenge encourages high schools in our 8 county Affiliate service area to join the fight against breast cancer by fundraising at their school and forming a School Team to participate in the Race for the Cure®.

What are the goals of the High School Team Challenge?

The goals of High School Team Challenge (HSTC) are:

  • Increase breast cancer awareness among high school students
  • Raise funds for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment for residents of Southwest Michigan
  • Increase participation of high school students at the Race for the Cure®
  • Have fun while positively affecting the community!

HSTC is a great opportunity for high school students to earn service-learning hours and have an impact on our local communities.  75% of the net funds raised at the Komen Southwest Michigan Race for the Cure® stay right here in Southwest Michigan. The remaining 25% of money raised at the Race goes to fund breast cancer research for the cures at the national level.

How does it Work?

High schools form their own team to compete with other high school’s teams throughout Southwest Michigan. Each school will need a Student Team Leader and a Faculty Advisor Co-Team Leader who are interested and willing to organize a team. Anyone from your high school, students and staff can join your team. Students receive discounted entry fees of $15.00 for untimed and $18 for timed. Prizes will be awarded to the high school team that raises the most money and to the school that has the most participants (based on a percentage of school enrollment). Winning teams will receive an award trophy.

We’re here to help you organize your team and answer any questions you might have.  Contact our High School Team Challenge Co-Chairs at HSTCraceforthecure@gmail.com.  Download our HSTC Team Captain Tool Kit and High School Team Challenge Flyer.

How do we Fund raise?

Individual schools may decide to run this program in any way they feel will generate the greatest response. Many schools across the country run it as a general school fundraiser or have it as a program that the student council or another school group coordinates. It is up to you to tailor the High School Team Challenge to suit your school’s needs.

A great example of high school fundraising power took place in February. The Vicksburg and Otsego High School Women’s Basketball Teams held a Bull Dogs for the Cure fundraiser and together raised $12,379! Click here to read about the amazing Bull Dogs for the Cure fundraiser.
